Interview with JiaHao Peng
What year and in what city were you born.
I was born in Wenling City, Zhejiang Province, China in 1994.
Where are you based currently?
I live and work in Los Angeles. I went to school in Ohio and moved to Los Angeles in 2020. I chose the city because of the nice weather and nature, and also the thriving art community.
What is your current identity (photographer, artist, creator, etc.)? Do you have an identity as a photographer? If you have been through other identities, please tell us about them as well.
I'm an artist who uses photography, plants and flowers as media to create works. I explore the connection between fine art and horticulture, and that's my main focus right now.
How do you want your work to be shown. (i.e., at an exhibition, online, in print, through publications, etc.)?
I would love to show my works at art galleries more. And get featured in magazines for sure. I'm very interested in showing plant and flower installations along with my photography works at galleries.
What is the final form of the work you ultimately aim for?
Photos. For me it's a form that can immortalize things.
What genre has influenced you the most?
Contemporary art.
If there's an artist you've found most interesting lately, who is it, and for what reason is he/she interesting?
I am really impressed by this artist called 河二 二火 하이이화(hai_ ihwa) They create the most weird but beautiful alien-like plant installations.

What does activity on social media platforms mean to an artist?
To foster engagement and ensure that an artist's work is seen, heard, and shared.
Was there a special occasion for you to get attention on social media?
I think so? If I understand it correctly. My friend Benji Le filmed a youtube video of me touring my house and it got 1.7m views.

I would like to hear stories about you taking photos of someone, others taking photos of you, and you taking photos of yourself.
I'm more of a spontaneous person, so when I take photos of others or when others take photos of me, it's usually during our hangouts, travels, or collaborative work. I love capturing people in their casual and authentic moments. When it comes to taking photos of myself, I prefer having an object that I feel connecte to, and I enjoy being alone rather than being with others. Whether it's taking an evening stroll with my husband at a cemetery, walking around the frozen Lake Erie in winter in Ohio, or simply watching the sunset from my rooftop, these are the moments when I feel most creative and have the desire to document them.

아트 갤러리에 내 작품을 더 많이 전시하고 싶다. 물론 다양한 잡지에도 실렸으면 한다. 가장 관심이 가는 것은 갤러리에 내 사진을 식물, 꽃 설치 작품과 함께 전시하는 방식이다.
궁극적으로 지향하는 최종 단계의 작업 형태는 무엇인가.
사진. 내게 사진은 사물을 불멸화 할 수 있는 형태다.
가장 영향을 많이 받는 장르는 무엇인가.
현대미술이다.
최근에 가장 흥미로웠던 아티스트가 있다면 누구이며 어떤 이유로 흥미로웠는가.

나는 즉흥적인 성격에 가까워서 다른 사람들의 사진을 찍거나 다른 사람들이 내 사진을 찍을 때는 대개 우리가 놀러 가거나 여행을 가거나 공동 작업을 할 때다. 나는 사람들의 일상적이고 진정한 순간을 포착하는 것을 좋아한다. 내 사진을 찍을 때, 나는 나와 연관된 물체와 함께하는 것을 좋아하고, 다른 사람들과 함께 있는 것보다 혼자 있는 시간을 보내는 것을 좋아한다. 남편과 공동묘지에서 저녁 산책을 하고, 겨울에 오하이오 주의 얼어붙은 이리 호수 주변을 걷고, 옥상에서 일몰을 감상하는 순간은 내가 가장 기록하고 싶은 순간이다.
