Interview with Masumi Ishida
What year and in what city were you born.
I was born in Saitama Prefecture in 1998.
Where are you based currently? Please tell us the city(cities) you work and live in.
Tokyo
What is your current identity (photographer, artist, creator, etc.)? Do you have an identity as a photographer? Please describe the process of your work.
I do not have a specific one. My work involves recording my daily activities or outings with friends. My photography is influenced by the nature, city lights, conversations with friends, and other things I encounter every day. When I travel with someone, I prefer to spend time as though I am residing there for a set amount of time.
What is the main platform to see your work or projects you have participated in.
Both the POPEYE magazine website and mine.
Depending on the time, the front page photo on my official website will vary. The website synchronizes the user’s entry time with the hour when each picture was taken. Additionally, depending on the time of the day, you may notice how the light changes.
I’ve been writing an article series called “Girl in the City “supplement” for POPEYE magazine since August of 2021. The series captures actresses every month in various locations. The work is accessible online and in print versions of POPEYE magazine.
Please tell us the process of how you usually work and how your work is displayed.
I carry out my work and share parts of it on social media. That, too, I regard to be a part of my work.
How do you want your work to be shown. (i.e., in the exhibition, online, prints, publications, etc.)
I wish to share my work in a variety of ways, such as through exhibitions, online showcases, prints, and books.
What genre has influenced you the most.
Magazines. I was so enamored with magazines of all kinds – from fashion to culture to advertisements – that I even yearned to be a magazine editor.
Have you ever published a photo book? How many have you published? Do you think it's important to publish a photo book?
I’ve released five photo books in all. I like the process of making photo books, so I wish to publish them regularly.

특정한 것은 없다. 나의 작업은 일상생활이나 친구랑 같이 다니는 여행 자체다. 생활 속에서 만나는 자연이나 길거리의 빛, 친구들과의 소통이 사진을 찍는 행위로 이어진다. 특히 누군가와 함께 일정 기간 평소와 다른 곳에서 생활하는 방식의 여행을 좋아한다.
당신의 작품 혹은 참여한 프로젝트를 볼 수 있는 주된 플랫폼은 어디인가.
