Interview with Suho Lee
What year and in what city were you born.
I was born in 1995 in Changwon, South Gyeongsang, Korea.
Where are you based currently? Please tell us the city(cities) you work and live in.
I am based in Seoul currently. After living in Mexico in my teen years and returning to Korea, I have worked in Seoul since.
What is your current identity (photographer, artist, creator, etc.)? Do you have an identity as a photographer? If you have been through other identities, please tell us about them as well.
I see myself as a musician and a video director. I stumbled on music during my years in Mexico and began working on videos to create one needed for my music.
What is the main platform to see your work or projects you have participated in.
I would say YouTube, definitely. Most of the video works I’ve done were with clients, so they are usually uploaded on their channels. As for music, I upload my work on the Balming Tiger channel and other streaming services.
Please tell us the process of how you usually work and how your work is displayed.
To me, the process of creating music is close to a play or meditation. As a play, I would work without any purpose many times, and meditation help organize some of my usual thoughts. I tend to work at a slow pace because I prefer to work on albums as much as possible.
How do you want your work to be shown. (i.e., in events, exhibitions, publications, prints, etc.)
Most of my music has been digitally released until Monika, the vinyl released last year. Since then, I’ve wanted to produce more vinyl records.
What do you see as the final form of work you ultimately aim for.
I would say that what the work means to me is more important than the form of work I ultimately aim for. Whether it be music or video, or a painting, photo, or text, I hope I can do honest work in any form.
What genres have influenced you the most.
I guess that would be Leftfield’s electronic music. They had the biggest influence on my current taste in music.
Who are the artists you find most interesting lately, and why?
I watched the music video director Hwang Hyun-Jin was working on lately and felt it was familiar yet original.
If there is an artist you would like to recommend to us, who is it.
I would recommend Chanhee Hong of Balming Tiger. He is an all-round player who understands the texture the best.

현재는 서울에서 거주하고 있다. 10대에 멕시코에서 지내다가 한국으로 돌아온 뒤로는 쭉 서울에서 작업하고 있다.
현재 당신의 정체성(포토그래퍼, 아티스트, 크리에이터 등)은 무엇인가? 스스로를 포토그래퍼로도 정의하는가. 어딘가를 경유해서 지금의 정체성을 형성했다면 그 과정도 말해달라.
뮤지션, 비디오 디렉터라고 스스로 인지하고 있다. 멕시코에서 지내던 시절 우연히 음악을 시작하게 되었고, 내 음악에 필요한 비디오를 만들고 싶다는 마음으로 영상 작업을 하게 되었다.
당신의 작품 혹은 참여한 프로젝트를 볼 수 있는 주된 플랫폼은 어디인가.
아무래도 유튜브다. 대부분의 영상 작업이 클라이언트를 둔 일이다 보니 그들의 채널에 업로드된다.
음악 작업의 경우, 바밍타이거 채널과 스트리밍 플랫폼에 업로드하고 있다.

음악 작업의 경우 나에겐 놀이 또는 명상에 가까운 것 같다. 목적성 없이 놀이로서 작업을 할 때가 많고 평소 하던 생각을 정리해 준다는 점에서는 명상 역할을 한다. 가급적 앨범 단위의 작업물을 선호하기 때문에 작업의 호흡이 느린 편이다.

레프트필드 전자음악이다. 지금의 취향을 가지게 되는데 가장 큰 영향을 준 것 같다.

황현진 감독이 작업 중인 뮤직비디오를 봤는데 익숙하면서도 새로운 느낌을 받았다.
