Interview with Yasumasa Yonehara
What year and in what city were you born?
I was born in 1959 in a small town called Udo City in Kumamoto Prefecture.
Where are you based currently? Please tell us the city (cities) you work and live in.
I am currently active in Tokyo. I started living in Tokyo as a col- lege student, and since then, I have been doing only what I like, and I live in Tokyo where it’s filled with what I love. My office is in Hara- juku, the studio is in Megu, and I live in Gakugeidaikaku (学芸大学).
What is your current identity (photographer, artist, creator, etc.)? Do you have an identity as a photographer? If you have been through other identities, please tell us about them as well.
Taking pictures or making works is just part of what editors do. I think that having this iden- tity is a result of knowing that there are things that you like, but also things you don’t, and of living with a strong will that you will make your surroundings more admirable.
Please tell us the process of how you usually work and how your work is displayed.
You can find my work at a gallery called KOMIYAMA-G in Jinbo-cho, Tokyo. If you check the notice of KOMIYAMA-G, you can see my past and current works. And I've been working as a freelance curator, and since April, I've crea- ted a gallery on the 7th floor of Hankyu Men's Tokyo and Harajuku. You can see the works of the ar- tists I curated there.

What is the final form of the work you ultimately aim for?
Working through the interests that you think are best at the time.
What genre has influenced you the most?
Music.
If there's an artist you've found most interesting lately, who is it, and for what reason is he/she interesting?
葵 It's (Aoi). In Japan, the word Emoi (エモい) has been used for a long time, and it seems that it has not been introduced properly abroad. Emoi is a term that includes all the light and brutality of youth, and it means that your heart is so shaken that it’s so difficult to express in words. Aoi's pictures express this feeling well, so I always feel an affection for youth, feeling flut- tered and excited.

What does activity on social media platforms mean to an artist?
I think it is the best media when it comes to conveying infor- mation and ideas accordingly.
Was there a special occasion for you to get attention on social media?
I think it's the result of in- sisting on lo-fi eroticism that doesn't violate the law, and I have consciously made such posts to have more followers.
I would like to hear stories about you taking photos of someone, others taking photos of you, and you taking photos of yourself.
1. When I was young, people told me that I'm not a photographer because when I take pictures, I don't take the pictures that people want; all my pictures were focusing on other parts. Photography that most people like was not fun at all, so I started to take pictures wit- hout looking at the lens, inspired by the way high school girls took pictures in the 1990s, which is now the beginning of a common way of pressing the shutter without loo- king into the lens. I could capture the facial expression that depicts people who get hit in the back of their heads and show their bare faces.
2. When my daughter started to go to kindergarten, I gave her a came- ra and asked her to take some pho- tos, and among the pictures taken, there was a picture of the unexpec- ted expression mentioned in 1.
3. I think my best selfie is an old ID picture (those photos in 4 cuts).

아오이 (葵)이다. 일본에서는 에모이(エモ
い)라는 말이 오랫동안 사용되고 있는데, 그것이 해 외에 올바르게 소개되지 않은 것 같다. 에모이란 청춘 의 빛과 잔혹함을 모두 포함한 것을 가리키는 말로 '마 음이 흔들려 뭐라고 말로 표현이 어려운 기분이 드는 것'을 의미한다. 아오이의 사진은 바로 그 에모이를 잘 표현하고 있어서 볼 때마다 청춘에 대한 애틋함을 느 껴서 가슴이 설렌다.

정보나 그에 따른 사상을 전달하는 데 있어서는 최고의 미디어라고 생각한다.
소셜 미디어에서 주목받는 특별한 계기가 있었나.
법률에 저촉되지 않는 로파이적인 에로티시즘을 고집한 결과라고 생각한다. 팔로워를 늘리기 위해 의식적으로 그런 투고를 했다.
누군가의 사진을 찍은 것, 다른 사람이 당신의 사진을 찍은 것, 그리고 스스로의 사진을 찍은 것에 대한 당신의 이야기를 듣고싶다.
1. 어릴 때 사진을 찍으면 사람들은 내가 사진을 제대로 안 찍고 다른 부분에 초점을 두고 쓸데없는 것만 찍는다고 했다. 사람들이 찍는 평범한 사진은 전혀재미를못느껴서이제는흔한사진 촬영법으로 잘 알려진, 렌즈를 들여다보지 않고 셔터를 누르는 행위의 시작이라고 할 수 있는 1990 년대 여고생들의 촬영법에 영감받아 렌즈를 보지 않고 사진을 찍었다. 그런 사진에 찍힌 것은 뒤통수를 맞고 평소의 민낯을 드러내는 피사체의 표정이었다.
2. 내 딸이 유치원에 다니기 시작했을 무렵 딸에게 카메라를 주고 찍어보라고 했는데, 그 중 1.에서 언급한것처럼상상도못했던내 표정이잘찍힌 사진이 있었다.
3. 최고의 셀피는 옛날에 찍은 증명사진(4컷을 찍을 수 있는 옛날 스타일)사진인 것 같다.
